FAQs
General
What is I Build India (IBI)?
I Build India is a citizen-led civic-tech platform that documents and showcases real instances where people build small, public-use infrastructure themselves — such as solar systems, water treatment plants, sanitation assets, and other local public goods. IBI makes such civic effort visible, verifiable, and cumulative.
Is IBI a government program?
No. IBI is not a government service and is not affiliated with any government department. It operates independently as a documentation and visibility platform.
Does IBI provide funding or money for projects?
No. IBI does not fund projects, collect money, or route payments. Projects listed on IBI are already built by citizens, communities, or organizations using their own funds.
Tax & Policy
Does IBI currently offer tax benefits or income-tax credits?
No. IBI does not offer any tax benefits, incentives, or credits today. Projects listed on IBI do not receive any tax benefit by default.
Why does IBI talk about tax credits at all then?
IBI is designed as a proof of concept. By documenting citizen-built public infrastructure in a structured, verifiable way, IBI aims to show policymakers that such civic effort can be formally recognized in the future — potentially through mechanisms like income-tax credits. Any such recognition would apply only if and when governments formally adopt such policies.
How do tax-credits work, in general?
Say you spent ₹1 lakh on building IBI projects in current financial year. Credits will be given on income tax to be paid in the next financial year, upto a certain capped amount (assume ₹1 lakh) or your tax liability, whichever is lower.
Will projects listed today get tax benefits later?
No guarantees. If governments ever introduce such policies, they may apply prospectively, based on future rules. IBI makes no promises regarding retrospective benefits.
Projects
What kind of projects can be listed on IBI?
Refer to the Project Standards Library for details. In general, projects that:
- Are already built and operational
- Serve public or shared use
- Address local infrastructure needs
- Have digitally traceable payments
- Can be verified through basic evidence
Ex: Rooftop solar installations, Water / sewage treatment systems, Public sanitation assets, Community energy or waste solutions.
Can I register a project I am planning to build?
No. Only completed or operational projects can be registered. IBI documents what already exists.
Who can register a project?
Anyone who has built or funded a qualifying project, or is submitting on behalf of a community, RWA, NGO, or group.
Do I need to register every project separately?
No. If you have built multiple projects, you can use the bulk Excel template to submit many projects at once
Who owns the project once they’re built?
Projects built on private property (rooftop solar, rainwater harvesting, EV chargers, etc.,) will remain private assets. Projects built on public property (pothole or drain repairs, water body maintenance, etc.,) will remain public assets.
Why does IBI require digital payment proof?
Digital traceability ensures transparency, auditability and credibility of documented projects. Acceptable proof includes GST invoices, digitally generated bills, or UPI/bank payment records. Cash-only transactions are not eligible.
Vendors & Technicians
Who can register as a vendor on IBI?
Vendors or technicians who:
- Have executed public-use projects

Does IBI verify or certify vendors?
No. Vendor information is self-declared. IBI does not certify, endorse, rank, or guarantee vendors or their work.
Will IBI give vendors work or leads?
